Scratch Off and Rub & Reveal Coatings
We offer a full range of Laminating, Foiling and UV Coating services including roller coat UV, spot UV and specialty finishes such as scratchy and heat sensitive (Rub & Reveal) ink coatings for spot prize-style competitions.
At PLC’s Penrose plant many of New Zealand’s top magazine covers are gloss laminated, foiled or coated on our state-of-the-art Steineman UV roller coater, which offers a world-class finish every time. In addition to our finishing solutions, PLC offers die-cutting and creasing.
The following is a summary of the processes we offer. If you require anymore information, please give us a call.
Lamination is the application of a thin film over the printed page and PLC offers three types of lamination depending on the finish you require.
Practically speaking, lamination adds strength to paper and card making it sought after for company annual reports, presentation catalogues and folders, postcards, and calendars to name a few. It also offers flexibility, long term durability and makes card and paper tear-resistant giving the finished product the ability to remain flat. Overall lamination holds the ink together on every page, preventing aging or signs of wear and tear.
Lamination is a multi-purpose finish because it is commonly used for design enhancement as much as for its other practical qualities.
Gloss Lamination
Gloss lamination is used extensively on magazine covers, postcards, book jackets, annual reports and point-of-sale material like posters. It is also used to highlight vivid colours and is particularly good at giving printed products a quality feel. Improved laminating technology means that these days, laminated products can be foil stamped and glued with most PVA’s or hot melts afterwards.
Matt Lamination
Matt lamination is used for all the practical purposes above – giving durability and helping to prevent curling. Its added advantage is to give a smooth silky feel. Increasingly it is being combined with spot UV to highlight certain aspects of design, to give a stunning 3D effect that often can’t be portrayed otherwise.
Specialty Films
Silver and Gold Metallic Lamination
Adhesive metallic laminating presents another exciting development in laminating finishes which are popular with designers of packaging requiring an expensive look, such as cosmetics, perfumes or liquors. This laminating can be printed on afterwards using UV offset or screen inks.
PLC offers silver and gold laminating films for printing on card or paper, so go ahead and create a stunning design incorporating this process.
Holographic Lamination
For something extra special, holographic lamination has the effect of creating a striking, eye-catching stand-out design. It is a multi-sparkle Polyester film which gives a 3D, futuristic look, typical of that found on products where manufacturers want to give a high-tech, 21st century impression.
Pacific Lamination and Coatings Ltd is New Zealand’s leading dedicated coating and laminating specialist. With nearly three decades of technical experience in providing finishes that more than meet international standards, we understand the particular needs of the graphic arts and packaging industries in this country.
PLC also offers adhesive laminating which is used predominately in the packaging industry to create tough wearing, classy looking packaging for a range of consumer goods. Adhesive lamination is also used in the food industry where FDA approval is necessary because food comes into contact with packaging, and where packaging must be microwavable.
Metallised Polyester Film
Metallised polyester films are used for two purposes, either to provide a platform for enhanced printing for further design embellishment, such as providing a colour wash over silver or gold or a pattern overlay, or for board that comes in direct contact with food.
Metallised Polyester film is an FDA-approved material used in New Zealand for food packaging and is applicable for products like pizza’s that need a microwavable board base.
The film can be applied to a range of flat board substrates either on long or short pre-printed packaging runs.
Window Laminating
Window laminating is used to create clear windows in packaging where goods are part of the display, particularly fresh food like sandwiches and cakes which have a limited shelf life. This process enables the display of goods in a sealed container providing a hygienic barrier to the atmosphere, while enabling people to choose the packaged food they want.
Window laminating has other packaging applications, particularly where goods need to be displayed while being protected from dust or other contaminants in retail outlets. Windows used for this type of application become part of the overall packaging design such as the use in retail sandwich cartons.
PLC offers the New Zealand printing industry its state-of-the-art UV Roller Coating on the Swiss-manufactured Steineman UV Roller Coat machine, installed in 2005, which produces high quality results that more than meet international standards.
Roller coating is a process using a 100% liquid coating of approximately 3gsm which is applied on top of a printed surface and cured under a UV lamp. The process is particularly suited to magazine covers and packaging because of its smooth, high sheen gloss finish. Our clients are consistently thrilled with the results we produce on the Steineman, which turns out the same high quality result on every single sheet meaning there is very little wastage.
Spot UV is a screen printing process that is gaining popularity in the design and packaging markets for its ability to provide stunning results in making designs stand out from the crowd.
Using high speed, automatic cylinder spot UV presses, PLC applies a clear gloss, pigmented, or matt coating to specific areas of a design to enhance its features, sometimes producing a 3D effect. It can be applied directly onto the print or on top of a matt lamination. Specific patterns can be incorporated into the design in clear gloss, such as linen, leather or dew drops which gives the whole design another dimension. Whatever your design idea we can provide further enhancement.
Most commonly used in ‘spot prize’ scratchy-style competitions, the ‘scratchy’ coating comes in a dense, opaque, wax-like ink which is applied on top of a UV coated print. When scratched off, it reveals the printed image underneath without damaging it.
PLC is at the forefront of this technology and has been offering this coating for many years.
Rub & Reveal coatings are new to this country, and are expected to gain in popularity as they provide a more durable product than ‘scratchies.’ The process involves the printing of heat-sensitive, UV cured ink over a printed image which is revealed when rubbed. The inks can be formatted to react to different temperatures. This process is suitable for a wider application from novelty stationery to competitions.
